May – month 4.

So I approached May with a better attitude than April, but at the same time I have started to wonder if I’m actually just settling into a realistic rhythm of documenting my eating habits.

The reality is that despite my relentless urge to cook and to try new things (but oddly not to record them), I still have priorities and other obligations to take centre stage . These, plus the human condition of sometimes running out of time, forgetting to get ingredients or simply being tired and ‘not that arsed to cook’, means that I still have plenty of days where mealtimes are functional rather than inspirational.

On these days it seems vaguely pointless to log another plate of scrambled eggs or an omelette as it’s hardly gripping content whichever way you look at it. Scrolling through my diary of images it’s interesting to note the number of plates containing falafel, as these usually define the moments when I’ve needed to hustle something quickly. Falafel is one of the few convenience ‘freezer foods’ I always have in and I do wonder about my DNA becoming partially chickpea; however falafel is a great start to get you rustling up a salad in true cupboard challenge style with whatever lurks in the fridge.

As always breakfasts stay more or less the same, although, I’ve done a bit more baking after getting inspired by the Hairy Bikers and discovering Ensaïmadas.

Lunches and evenings are usually a mixed up affair, sometimes one is light whilst the other heavier (in no particular order) and sometimes they are equally weighted.

A small change has been a growing affinity towards aubergines….?

Historically I’ve been a bit standoffish with aubergines, using them sparingly and specifically. For whatever reason, possibly age..? I’ve decided to give them a bit more bandwidth and have to admit I’ve been enjoying them.

It’s one of the quirks of flavour and taste, like everything with food, it’s a constantly moving target.
